The case for steric repulsion causing the staggered conformation of ethane.

چکیده
It has recently been argued that the barrier to rotation around the C C bond in ethane is not to be explained by the generally accepted picture of steric hindrance between vicinal C H bonds in the eclipsed conformation but is caused by more favorable orbital interaction in the staggered conformation. In that conformation the C H bonds at opposite ends of the molecule have an in-plane trans conformation which is favorable for interaction of the s* antibonding orbital of one C H unit with the occupied sC H bonding orbital at the other side (six such pairs). This view has been advocated with

On the origin of internal rotation in ammonia borane
The internal rotation in ammonia borane (AB) was studied on the basis of natural orbitals for chemical valence (NOCV) and eigenvectors for Pauli repulsion (NOPR). We found that the total hyperconjugation stabilization (ca. 5 kcal mol(-1)), based on the charge transfer from the occupied σ (B-H) orbitals into the empty σ*(N-H), slightly favors the staggered conformation over the eclipsed one; how...
متن کاملTheoretical analysis of the rotational barrier of ethane.
The understanding of the ethane rotation barrier is fundamental for structural theory and the conformational analysis of organic molecules and requires a consistent theoretical model to differentiate the steric and hyperconjugation effects. Due to recently renewed controversies over the barrier's origin, we developed a computational approach to probe the rotation barriers of ethane and its cong...
متن کاملDissecting the hindered rotation of ethane.
The existence of a rotational barrier of ca. 3 kcalmol 1 around the C C single bond in ethane has been known since the early studies of Ebert, Wagner, Eucken and Weigert and Pitzer done in the 1930s. Even the simplest ab initio methods are able to reproduce this fundamental result. However, the physical origin of this hindered rotation is still under controversy in the literature. There are two...
متن کاملThe rotational barrier in ethane: a molecular orbital study.
The energy change on each Occupied Molecular Orbital as a function of rotation about the C-C bond in ethane was studied using the B3LYP, mPWB95 functional and MP2 methods with different basis sets. Also, the effect of the ZPE on rotational barrier was analyzed. We have found that σ and π energies contribution stabilize a staggered conformation. The σ(s) molecular orbital stabilizes the staggere...
